Frequently asked questions
Is my file or my password sent to a server?
No. The file is read and decrypted in your browser, in the background, and the password is only used there to open it. Nothing is sent, logged or stored.
Can you open a PDF without knowing the password?
No. If the PDF asks for a password to open, its content is encrypted with it: without the right password there is no way to decrypt it, and we don't try to guess passwords. The tool removes the password from a file you can already open.
What if the PDF opens normally but won't let me print or copy?
Those restrictions come from an owner password. Since the file opens without a password, its content is already readable; the tool creates a copy without the restrictions, without asking for any password.
Can I unlock any PDF?
Only use it on files you have the right to change: your own documents, or ones you are authorized to change by whoever protected them. Removing the protection doesn't change the document's copyright or terms of use.
Which kinds of protection are supported?
The standard PDF password protection: 40- and 128-bit RC4 and 128- and 256-bit AES, used by Word, Acrobat, LibreOffice, banks and most apps. Certificate-based protection isn't supported yet.
What else changes in the file besides the password?
The visible content stays the same. As in our other tools, we remove JavaScript, automatic actions and embedded attachments for safety. If the original had a digital signature, it is no longer valid in the unlocked copy.
What is the maximum size?
150 MB per PDF.
Do I need to sign up, install anything or pay?
No. It's free, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
